Designing the Perfect Bespoke Engagement Ring

We are very lucky to have some amazing designers as part of our team, who work with our customers to create bespoke designs that are truly unique and special. Our Hampshire store designer, Georgia, takes us through her favourite part of her job.

By far one of the best parts of my job is helping clients to design the perfect engagement ring for their partner.

Delicate clusters, vintage three stones, bold rub-over solitaires, contemporary fancy cut diamonds or even coloured gem stones; you name it, we can create it.

Long gone are the days when the only variant on the engagement ring was the amount you spent.

With so many varieties of styles available it is becoming ever more difficult to pick that perfect ring, even here, where we have a stunning range of engagement rings in our Family Collections, we will always have clients who want something that is truly a one-off.

Generally people have a rough idea of what they are looking for, but can be completely overwhelmed with the choice of rings out there, so my first task is to chat with them to narrow down the options.

I want to get to know the couple, understand what is important to them and start to build a picture of the lucky lady. Choosing an engagement ring is such a big responsibility it is imperative to ask as many questions as possible to translate all that information into a design. What research have they done up until now? Does his partner already wear jewellery? What is her style like? What does she do for a job? Has she commented on friends’ rings before? Has she liked any photos of jewellery on social media?

bespoke ring designIt is just as important to know what she doesn’t like as well as what she does. Often the gent will know to avoid a certain style which can help to eliminate other options. Even if she hasn’t pointed out her perfect ring you would be surprised how much information you have already picked up on…

“She loves Princess cut diamonds”

“She’s always said she doesn’t want anything too blingy”

“She’s a vet and wants something practical she can wear all the time”

“I know she really likes her mum’s engagement ring”

Just these simple questions can narrow things down enormously, I can find very quickly from talking to someone about their partner if the design is going to be contemporary, vintage, classic etc. and we can build on the information from there.

At this point I start to sketch ideas out. I might use some pieces from our Family Collections to show different diamond cuts, settings and metal colours. This is the exciting part when the gentleman can really start to get stuck in, offering ideas and suggestions on what he thinks she would like.

Once we have narrowed down the designs to a couple of finalists I will go away and draw them up in a more detailed way, showing different sizes of stones and metals, and to source some diamonds that would be suitable ready for the client to see.

Showing the client the different stones is such a wonderful way for them to really get involved.

bespoke ring designFor me this is one of the best parts. Showing the client the different stones is such a wonderful way for them to really get involved. Handling each diamond and looking through the loupe they start to learn about what makes our diamonds so spectacular. It will make the ring so much more special for the recipient to know that he hand-picked the stone, and to hear all about the hearts and arrows and the cut of the stone that he learnt about when choosing it, that he can share with her later.

Last but certainly not least is the small job of making the ring! There is so much enjoyment in making something when I know the thought that has gone into the design by the client and the excitement of the proposal to come. Where possible I like to send updates and photos to show the many different stages of the manufacture and to keep them involved right up to the moment of collection.

The real sign of success is getting emails and visits from the newly engaged couple, hearing all about the big proposal and how much she loves the ring! These happy endings are what inspire us to keep designing and making beautiful jewellery for our customers.
