Michael Laing OBE

Michael Laing has been an intrinsic part of the business for over 40 years. As much a designer as he is a businessman, Michael studied art, design and craftsmanship at Sir John Cass College in London before returning to the family business in 1971.

Known for his pursuit of excellence, Michael handpicks all of our diamonds in Antwerp, the diamond capital of the world.

For us it’s far better to come to the source, I will look at up to 1200 diamonds over three days and only select and buy about 30 to 35. I’m looking for that superior play of light. Pinheads of rainbow colours that are there in a glimpse and gone again.

Michael has been a Fellow of the Gemmological Association since 1973 and is a former chairman of the National Association of Goldsmiths’ Education Committee in London, which oversees jewellery trade training in the UK.

He was also chairman of the Assay Office Scotland, which tests and hallmarks gold, silver and platinum – the oldest consumer protection in the world. It was for services to hallmarking that Michael received an OBE in 2002.

With Michael at the helm, LAING and PARKHOUSE have gone from strength to strength, building on our well-known reputation for the finest designs, diamonds and watches.    After learning the trade from his father, Michael is keen to pass down the Laing values and traditions to his own son, Richard, who joined the family firm in 2008.

Having a son in the business who has been brought up in the trade I can be sure that the standards and the values of the business have a consistency to them. There’s so much about diamonds and about the business that you can’t learn in a book and you can only learn from experience.

Bespoke diamond collections are a specialism of the company's designs and the Esme, Sienna, Isabella, Anna, Sarah, Elizabeth and Suzanne ranges perfectly illustrate the charm, creativity and originality of our designs. Each of these collections has a story to tell, inspired by Michael’s daughters and granddaughters.

It’s the detail in the designs that’s the differential with the ‘Sienna’ reflecting her creativity, imagination and infectious laughter and charming secret diamonds to make you smile, while the ‘Esme’ Collection is infused with her inquisitive nature, gracefulness and perfectionism.

Michael is married with 3 children and 5 grandchildren. His passions include fly fishing, scuba diving, rugby, the arts and fine wine. In November 2013, Michael was awarded the Chevalier of Burgundy from the Confriéré des Chevaliers du Tastevin.
